THE R33 SKYLINE GT-R
Introduced in January 1995, the R33 GT-R had the difficult job of following the incredibly successful R32 “Godzilla.”
Rather than simply recreating the R32, Nissan developed the R33 into a more refined and capable performance machine. The new GT-R featured a stiffer chassis, improved weight distribution and further development of Nissan’s sophisticated all-wheel-drive technology.
Under the hood remained one of the most famous Japanese engines ever built:
The RB26DETT.
This legendary 2.6-liter DOHC twin-turbo inline-six was officially rated at 280 PS in Japan and paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Its strength, tuning potential and unmistakable character helped make the RB26 one of the defining engines of the JDM performance era.
ATTESA E-TS + SUPER HICAS
The R33 wasn’t just about horsepower.
Nissan equipped the GT-R with its advanced ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system, which could distribute power to help the car find traction when it was needed.
The R33 also utilized Nissan’s Super HICAS four-wheel-steering system.
V-Spec models took things even further with ATTESA E-TS PRO, incorporating an active limited-slip differential and additional chassis technology aimed at improving performance.
Together, these systems helped make the R33 an incredibly sophisticated performance car for the mid-1990s.
THE SUB-8-MINUTE GT-R
One of the R33 GT-R’s greatest achievements came at Germany’s legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife.
During development, an R33 GT-R recorded a lap of approximately 7 minutes 59 seconds.
Breaking the eight-minute barrier was a huge achievement for a production car in the mid-1990s and demonstrated just how much Nissan had improved the GT-R platform.
The R33 had officially proven that bigger didn’t necessarily mean slower.
FROM JAPAN TO LE MANS
The R33 generation also took the GT-R name onto one of motorsport’s biggest stages — the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
NISMO developed the GT-R LM for international GT competition, with an R33-based entry finishing an impressive 10th overall and 5th in class at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The racing program also inspired one of the coolest limited-production R33s: the Champion Blue LM Limited.
THE LEGENDARY NISMO 400R
Then there was the 400R.
Created by NISMO, the incredibly rare R33-based 400R took the GT-R formula to another level.
Its heavily modified 2.8-liter RB-X GT2 twin-turbo inline-six produced approximately 400 PS — an enormous number for a Japanese road car in the 1990s.
With aggressive bodywork, upgraded suspension, brakes and other NISMO modifications, the 400R became one of the ultimate factory-built Skylines and today remains one of the most desirable GT-R variants ever produced.
A JDM ICON
Produced from 1995 through 1998, the BCNR33 sits between two of the most famous Japanese performance cars ever created — the R32 and R34 GT-R.
For years that caused the R33 to be overlooked.
Today, enthusiasts increasingly appreciate it for exactly what it is: a twin-turbo, manual-transmission, all-wheel-drive Japanese performance car engineered during one of the greatest periods in Nissan’s history.
